How to use the area converter
- Enter the area you already know. Zero is valid, while negative areas are rejected because this tool converts physical area rather than signed coordinates.
- Choose the current unit under From unit. The list includes square meters, square centimeters, square kilometers, square feet, square inches, square yards, acres, ares, and hectares.
- Choose the unit you need under To unit, then select Convert area. The result card shows the converted value and the factor used for this exact direction.
- Use Swap units to reverse the direction without retyping. If a result is already available, it becomes the next input so you can check the return conversion. Copy result places a plain-text equation on the clipboard.
How area conversion works
Every supported unit is stored as an area in square meters. The converter first multiplies the entered number by the square-meter value of the source unit, then divides by the square-meter value of the destination unit. Keeping one common base avoids a separate formula for every possible pair and makes either direction follow the same rule.
Area factors are squared length factors. One foot is exactly 0.3048 meter, so one square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square meter. This is why moving from meters to feet is not enough: 1 m² is about 10.76 ft², not about 3.28 ft². The same squared relationship gives 144 in² in 1 ft² and 9 ft² in 1 yd².
Metric land units use powers of ten. One are is exactly 100 m², one hectare is exactly 10,000 m² or 100 ares, and one square kilometer is exactly 1,000,000 m² or 100 hectares. This calculator uses the international acre: exactly 43,560 international square feet, equal to 4,046.8564224 m². It does not use the slightly different historical US survey acre.
Calculations retain JavaScript numeric precision and rounding happens only for display. Ordinary results show no more than two decimal places and drop unnecessary zeros. A very small positive result uses additional significant digits or scientific notation instead of being shown as zero. Copied text uses the same readable display, so it is suitable for notes but not a substitute for a legally certified survey value.
Worked examples
Example 1: floor area from square meters to square feet
Enter 100, choose Square meter (m²), and convert to Square foot (ft²). The calculation is 100 × 1 ÷ 0.09290304, giving 1,076.39104167… ft². The page displays 1,076.39 ft². This is useful when a floor plan is metric but a flooring quotation is expressed in square feet.
Example 2: farmland from acres to hectares
Enter 2.5, choose Acre (ac), and convert to Hectare (ha). The calculation is 2.5 × 4,046.8564224 ÷ 10,000, giving 1.0117141056 ha. The page displays 1.01 ha. Swap the units after converting and the unrounded result is reused internally, returning approximately 2.5 ac.
When this conversion is useful
- Compare room, apartment, office, or flooring areas when plans and supplier documents use different metric or imperial units.
- Translate land listings between acres, hectares, ares, and square meters for an initial comparison across regions.
- Convert small craft, tile, print, or material surfaces between square centimeters, square inches, square feet, and square yards.
- Check a manual calculation or a spreadsheet factor in the opposite direction by using Swap units and comparing the returned value.
Input rules, precision, and limitations
- This tool converts an area that is already known. It does not calculate the area of a rectangle, circle, irregular parcel, wall, roof, or three-dimensional surface from dimensions.
- Enter plain decimal numbers with a period, such as 1250.5. Commas and localized decimal separators are not parsed because they can mean either a decimal or thousands separator. Scientific notation such as 2.5e6 is supported.
- Negative values are rejected. Zero is accepted and converts to zero in every unit. Extremely large values that overflow or positive values too small for the numeric range produce an error instead of an infinite or false zero result.
- Displayed values are rounded for readability, so copying a displayed result and repeatedly converting it can accumulate rounding differences. The Swap units control retains the current unrounded calculation for the immediate return conversion.
- Acre means the international acre based on the international foot. Historical or cadastral records that explicitly use US survey feet or a local acre definition need the factor specified by that record.
- Real-estate, tax, planning, agricultural, and legal documents can have jurisdiction-specific definitions and measurement tolerances. Confirm important figures with the original record or a qualified surveyor; this page is a unit converter, not a survey or legal certification.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 1 km² equal to 1,000,000 m²?
A kilometer is 1,000 meters on each side. Area multiplies both dimensions, so 1 km² equals 1,000 m × 1,000 m, which is 1,000,000 m². Using only 1,000 would apply a length factor to an area.
How many square feet are in an acre?
One international acre is exactly 43,560 square feet. Select Acre as the source and Square foot as the destination to convert any acre value, including decimals.
What is the difference between an are and an acre?
An are is a metric land unit equal to exactly 100 m². An international acre equals 4,046.8564224 m², or about 40.47 ares. Their similar names do not mean they are interchangeable.
Why does a tiny result show more than two decimal places?
Rounding every result to two decimal places would turn useful values such as 1 m² in acres into 0. The converter keeps extra significant digits, and uses scientific notation only for especially small or large values, so the magnitude remains visible.
Can I use the result for a property contract?
Use it as a calculation aid, then verify the source unit, acre definition, boundary measurement, required rounding, and official record. A mathematical unit conversion cannot confirm parcel boundaries or replace the measurement rules required by a local authority.
