Bowling score calculator

Enter pins for each roll and calculate a familiar 10-frame scorecard. Frames stay unconfirmed until their bonus rolls are known.

Ten-pin rolls

Your data stays in this browser.

Choose pins knocked down on each roll. Later rolls unlock in sequence; a strike or spare unlocks the required bonus roll.

How to score ten-pin bowling

A ten-pin game has ten frames. Open frames score their pinfall immediately, while strikes and spares wait for later rolls before the frame and cumulative total can be confirmed.

Enter a game frame by frame

Choose the pins knocked down on the first roll of each frame. In frames 1–9, a strike ends that frame; otherwise enter the second roll without making the two-roll pinfall exceed ten. Later controls unlock only when the required earlier roll exists.

Select Calculate bowling score at any point. The result table uses X for a strike, / for a spare and − for a zero roll. A dash in the cumulative row means that frame still needs a roll or bonus and is not silently treated as zero.

Strike and spare bonuses

An open frame is simply the two-roll pinfall. A spare is ten plus the pins on the next single roll. A strike is ten plus the pins on the next two rolls, even when those rolls belong to one or two later frames.

Because bonuses reach forward, a strike followed by only one known roll has no confirmed frame score yet. Cumulative scoring also waits at that point; later numbers are not shown as if they were final.

The tenth frame

The tenth frame has no future frame from which to borrow bonus rolls. A spare earns one extra roll and a strike earns two. An open tenth frame ends after two rolls and must not contain a third.

After a strike, the pins reset for the second roll. If that second roll is another strike, they reset again. If it is less than ten, the third roll uses the pins left standing and the last two rolls cannot exceed ten.

Worked games

Nine pins then a miss in every frame scores 9 × 10 = 90. Ten spares made as 5/ with a five-pin bonus score 15 in every frame for 150. Twelve consecutive strikes—one in each of the first nine frames and three in the tenth—produce the maximum 300.

For X, 7/, 9−, the first strike becomes 20 because its next two rolls are 7 and 3. The spare becomes 19 because its bonus roll is 9. The open frame is 9, so the three-frame cumulative total is 48.

Printing, limits, and corrections

Print scorecard prints the current ten-frame sheet; it can be blank, partially entered, or calculated. The browser print dialog controls paper and PDF output. Copy result produces a compact text scorecard only after a valid calculation.

This page follows ordinary ten-pin scoring for one bowler and one game. It does not track fouls, splits, handicaps, league certification, multiple bowlers, pin diagrams or official records. Correct any frame and calculate again; the tool recomputes every affected bonus from the start.

Use the frame score and cumulative rows together when checking a correction. The frame row shows only that frame after bonuses; the cumulative row carries every confirmed frame through that point. If an early bonus is unknown, later cumulative cells remain blank even when later rolls have been entered, because a reliable running total cannot skip the unresolved frame.

FAQ

Why is a frame score shown as a dash?

The frame is incomplete or a strike/spare still needs later bonus rolls. It is not counted as zero.

Why is the second roll disabled after a strike?

In frames 1–9 a strike immediately ends the frame. The next roll belongs to the next frame.

When do I get a third roll in frame 10?

Only after a strike or spare. An open tenth frame ends after two rolls.

Can a perfect game have 12 strikes?

Yes. Nine strikes fill frames 1–9, and the tenth-frame strike earns two bonus rolls.

Does editing an early frame update later totals?

Yes, after you calculate again. Every frame is recomputed so strike and spare bonuses stay consistent.
