How to use
Enter your cat’s chronological age in years and choose Calculate. A cat of 7 years and 6 months is 7.5 years; 9 months is 0.75 year. Use a decimal point or comma, without a thousands separator. The supported range is 6 months to 21 years. You can read the complete table below without entering anything.
The pale age example calculates as shown. Focusing the field removes the example; leaving the field empty restores it. Editing clears the previous result and disables Copy result. Calculate again to confirm the new age. Copy includes the input age, human-age analogy, method and feline life stage.
Reading the result
The main number answers the human-age comparison. The second item is the cat’s own life stage, based on chronological age rather than the converted number. The method line distinguishes a published table point from a value interpolated between points. Decimal places show arithmetic, not the precision of a biological measurement.
The reference has 0.5 year ≈ 10 human years, 1 ≈ 15 and 2 ≈ 24. After 2 years, each additional year adds four: human age ≈ 24 + 4 × (cat age − 2). We interpolate linearly between the earlier points. The chart is an educational analogy; two cats of the same age need not have the same health or behavior.
Worked examples
A 7.5-year-old cat gives 24 + 4 × 5.5 = 46 human years and the mature-adult stage. A 12-year-old cat gives 64 human years and the senior stage. These are separate outputs: the life-stage label comes from 7.5 or 12 cat years, not from comparing 46 or 64 with a human retirement age.
For a younger cat, 0.75 year lies halfway between 0.5 and 1 year, so this calculator shows 12.5 human years. That intermediate estimate is our interpolation; it is not an extra measured point in the source chart.
What the life stages mean
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP framework groups cats into kitten, young adult, mature adult and senior stages. Here, kitten is under 1 year, young adult is 1 to under 7, mature adult is 7 through 10, and senior is over 10. This continuous-age interpretation keeps the calculator’s boundaries explicit.
These labels provide a vocabulary for age-related discussions. They do not diagnose illness or determine an individual care plan. The youngest supported input is 0.5 year because that is the earliest comparison in the chosen age table; we do not extend the scale to newborn kittens.
Is one cat year seven human years?
Not in this reference. Early development and later years use different rates. A 2-year-old cat corresponds to about 24, rather than 14, human years.
Do breed or indoor living change the answer?
This table has no breed or indoor/outdoor coefficients. Those factors are not converted into unsupported multipliers. The result remains the same for the same age and does not promise equal health or longevity.
Can I estimate a rescued cat’s birthday here?
No. This tool needs an age you already know or have estimated elsewhere. If you have a plausible range, calculate both ends. The displayed decimals cannot remove uncertainty in the original age.
What if my cat is older than 21 or younger than 6 months?
The calculator reports an unsupported age instead of inventing a comparison outside the selected table. It does not imply that such ages are impossible. The static table remains available for reference.
