How to use this final grade calculator
- Enter your current grade for coursework completed before the final exam. Do not use a grade that already includes the final.
- Enter the target course grade you want after the final.
- Enter the final exam weight from your syllabus. For example, enter 40 if the final is worth 40% of the course.
- Read the required score and its status. You can copy the summary or print the page for reference.
What the result means
A result from 0% through 100% is within the usual exam scoring range. A result below 0% means the target is already secured; the calculator displays 0% as the practical minimum and explains the raw threshold. A result above 100% needs extra credit or another course adjustment.
Formula: required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight.
Final exam score examples
A reachable target
Current 80%, target 85%, final weight 40%: you need 92.5%. Checking the weighted result gives 80% × 60% + 92.5% × 40% = 85%.
A target already secured
Current 90%, target 70%, final weight 20%: the mathematical threshold is −10%, so 0% is enough to remain above the target.
A target above the usual maximum
Current 60%, target 90%, final weight 30%: the required score is 160%. A 100% final would produce a 72% course grade.
Important limits and common mistakes
- Use the pre-final grade. If the gradebook counts an ungraded final as zero, find the grade for completed work.
- Use the exam’s course weight, not its point total. A 200-point final may still be worth 25% of the course.
- Check category weighting. The calculator assumes your current percentage already combines all non-final categories correctly.
- Instructor rounding, letter-grade cutoffs, dropped scores, curves, and extra credit are not assumed.
Frequently asked questions
Why can the required score be negative?
Your existing weighted work may already contribute enough points. The practical minimum shown is 0%, while the explanation preserves the mathematical threshold.
What if the result is over 100%?
Review the inputs. If they are correct, ask whether extra credit, a curve, replacement grading, or another weighting rule applies.
Does this save or send my grades?
No. The calculation runs in your browser for this visit. The page does not save a course record or send the entered percentages to a server.
