Enter zero or a positive number. Use a point for decimals; scientific notation such as 1e-3 is accepted.

Choose units and select Convert mass.

How to use the mass converter

  1. Enter the numeric mass in the left field. Use a decimal point rather than a comma, and leave the unit symbol out of the field.
  2. Choose the current unit under From unit and the unit you need under To unit. The six choices are g, kg, metric tonne, lb, commercial oz, and stone.
  3. Select Convert mass or press Enter. Editing the number clears the previous answer; after a successful conversion, changing either unit recalculates immediately.
  4. Read the main answer and both mixed-unit lines. Use Copy result to copy a labeled statement, or Swap units to exchange the two unit selections.

Conversion method and unit definitions

The converter relates every unit to kilograms, then divides by the kilogram value of the destination unit. Metric relationships are direct: 1 kilogram is 1,000 grams and 1 metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms. The word tonne on this page always means the metric tonne, not the 2,000-pound US short ton or the 2,240-pound UK long ton.

For customary units, the international avoirdupois pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilogram. One avoirdupois pound contains 16 avoirdupois ounces, so one ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams. One stone contains 14 pounds and therefore equals 6.35029318 kilograms. Calculations keep these full factors internally and round only the displayed result.

The ounce choice is the ordinary commercial, food, postal, and household ounce. It is not the troy ounce used for precious metals. A troy ounce is about 31.1035 grams, so substituting it would produce a different answer. The unit label explicitly says avoirdupois to make this boundary visible before conversion.

The main result normally shows no more than two decimal places and removes unnecessary trailing zeros. Small positive values retain enough significant digits to avoid appearing as zero, while very small or large values use compact scientific notation. The mixed lines split the full internal mass at whole-pound or whole-stone boundaries; if rounding reaches 16 oz or 14 lb, the value carries into the next larger unit.

Worked mass conversion examples

Example 1: kilograms to pounds and ounces

Enter 1, choose Kilograms (kg), and choose Pounds (lb). The main result is 2.2 lb because 1 ÷ 0.45359237 is about 2.20462. The mixed result uses the unrounded amount: 2 lb plus 3.27 oz. The stone line reads 0 st plus 2.2 lb. Copying the result keeps the source and destination units together.

Example 2: stone to kilograms

Enter 11, choose Stone (st), and choose Kilograms (kg). Since one stone is 14 lb, the source is 154 lb. Multiplying by the exact pound factor gives 69.853225 kg, displayed as 69.85 kg. The mixed lines confirm 154 lb 0 oz and 11 st 0 lb, so the whole-unit boundary does not leave a misleading remainder.

Example 3: ounces to grams

Enter 8, choose Ounces, avoirdupois (oz), and choose Grams (g). Eight ounces equal half a pound, or 226.796185 grams, displayed as 226.8 g. The mixed result is 0 lb 8 oz. This is a mass conversion; converting eight fluid ounces would require a volume unit and, for grams, the substance density.

Input, precision, and practical limits

Frequently asked questions

Is an ounce here the same as a fluid ounce?

No. The supported oz is an avoirdupois unit of mass equal to one sixteenth of a pound. A fluid ounce measures volume. Converting volume to mass also needs the material density.

Is this the ounce used for gold and silver?

No. Precious metals commonly use the troy ounce, about 31.1035 g. This converter deliberately uses the commercial avoirdupois ounce, exactly 28.349523125 g.

Why does the stone result include pounds?

Decimal stone is useful for calculations, but everyday readings are often written as whole stone plus remaining pounds. The mixed line provides that form without changing the main selected-unit result.

What happens when a remainder rounds to 16 oz or 14 lb?

The converter carries the rounded remainder into the next unit. A result near 13 lb 16 oz becomes 14 lb 0 oz, and a result near 13 st 14 lb becomes 14 st 0 lb.

Why can a round trip differ after I retype the answer?

The screen may round an ordinary result to two decimal places. The current calculation keeps its fuller internal value, but manually retyping the rounded display discards the hidden digits and can introduce a small difference.
