How to use the place value calculator
- Enter a base-10 integer string with an optional leading plus or minus sign. Leading zeros are deliberately preserved.
- Choose Calculate or press Enter. The summary shows the normalized integer, entered digit count, digit sum, and expanded magnitude.
- Read the table from left to right. Position 0 is the ones place, position 1 is tens, position 2 is hundreds, and each step left multiplies the place by ten.
- Editing the text invalidates the old table and Copy result. Clear removes the input, result, errors, and copy state.
How place value and digit sum work
For a digit d in position p counted from the right starting at zero, its place value is d × 10ᵖ. The entered magnitude is the sum of all these place values.
The digit sum adds the digit characters themselves, not their place values. For 4,072 the digit sum is 4 + 0 + 7 + 2 = 13.
A minus sign applies to the complete magnitude and is not a digit. Leading zeros remain table rows and increase the entered digit count, but contribute zero to the magnitude and digit sum.
Examples
Break down 4,072
Enter 4072. The rows show 4 × 10³ = 4000, 0 × 10² = 0, 7 × 10¹ = 70, and 2 × 10⁰ = 2. The digit sum is 13.
Keep leading zeros
Enter 0042. Four rows are shown: the two leading zero places remain visible, while the normalized integer is 42 and the digit sum is 6.
Handle a negative sign
Enter −305. The table describes the magnitude 305 and its digits; the sign note and expanded form show that the whole value is negative.
Limits and interpretation
- The input may contain up to 100 digit characters, excluding one optional leading sign.
- Only base-10 integer characters are accepted. Decimal points, grouping separators, spaces, and exponent notation are rejected.
- Leading zeros are preserved in the table by design, while the normalized integer removes them. Negative zero normalizes to 0.
- The digit sum ignores the sign and adds every digit, including zeros.
- Large place values wrap inside the table and remain exact; there is no word-form or infinite-output mode.
- This page does not convert digits to number words, change numeric bases, or analyze decimal fractional places.
Frequently asked questions
Which side is position zero?
The rightmost digit is position 0, the ones place. Positions increase by one moving left.
Do leading zeros count as digits?
They count in the entered digit count and appear as rows, but add no numeric value.
Does the minus sign change each row?
The table shows the unsigned magnitude. The sign applies once to the whole expanded magnitude.
What is the digit sum of a negative integer?
Ignore the sign and add the digits. For −305, the digit sum is 8.
Can I enter a decimal?
No. This page is deliberately limited to integer positions.
