How to record your screen online

Use this free online screen recorder for a short demonstration, a slide walkthrough or a reproducible software issue. Press Choose screen & record, select a screen, window or tab in the browser’s own dialog, and confirm sharing. Recording begins after that selection; opening this page alone captures nothing. Available choices depend on your browser and operating system. Keep this page open and in the foreground while recording. Pause temporarily stops adding video, Resume continues the same file, and Stop recording finishes it. If pause is unavailable, its button stays disabled.

Sound and what gets recorded

Only the surface you share is recorded. For a tab demonstration, select the tab you want viewers to see rather than this recorder, which can create a repeating mirror effect. Enable the browser’s share-audio option if it is offered and you want sound. The status reports whether an audio track was actually supplied; it does not prove that audible sound is playing. No microphone or camera is requested, and separate audio sources are not mixed. If no audio track is supplied, the video is silent. Review playback before using the result.

Two practical examples

For a bug report, share the affected browser tab, reproduce the issue for about 20 seconds, stop and replay the video to check that the relevant action is visible. Download the result before attaching it elsewhere. For a slide walkthrough, share the presentation window, pause while preparing the next slide, resume and stop after the final slide. The preview contains the recorded sections in one file. Pauses are excluded from the recorded-time display, but the five-minute session limit includes them.

Limits and saving your file

A session stops after five minutes of elapsed time, including pauses, or near the 128 MiB data limit. Memory use also includes browser encoding buffers, so this is not a guarantee of total browser memory consumption. If a final data chunk exceeds the limit, that attempt is rejected instead of presenting a potentially broken truncated video. Closing the page, reloading, sleeping the device or running in the background can interrupt capture. This is intended for short sessions, not unattended recording. Download the video and verify it in your Downloads folder; this page provides no cloud backup or recovery.

Which video format will I get?

The recorder checks supported MIME types and displays the format the browser actually produced. WebM is saved as .webm and MP4 as .mp4; there is no conversion or forced MP4 export. An unrecognized format receives .bin rather than a misleading extension. Playback compatibility varies between devices and applications. The preview helps check the result, but you should also open the downloaded file in its intended player.

Why is screen recording unavailable or silent?

Both screen sharing and MediaRecorder must be available in a secure context. Many mobile browsers do not expose screen capture, so mobile recording is not promised and the start button is disabled when the required APIs are missing. On desktop, a blocked permission or operating-system restriction can still prevent capture even when the APIs exist. Retry after reviewing those settings. Sound availability depends on the chosen surface, browser and operating system; sharing a window does not guarantee system audio.

What happens when I stop sharing or try again?

The browser’s Stop sharing control also ends recording and releases the owned tracks. A non-empty result becomes available for preview and download. A cancelled selection, empty recording or failed attempt preserves your previous file. A successful new recording replaces it, so save anything you want to keep first. Clear deliberately discards the file and stops any active capture; it cannot be undone.

Is this a video editor or a storage service?

No. The tool records and saves a short video locally. It does not trim, annotate, merge microphone audio, add a camera, upload files or retain recordings after you leave. Before sharing the download elsewhere, replay it to confirm the source, sound and visible content are correct.
