Make spelling worksheets with your own words
A weekly word list, a few words from a reading lesson, or a set of spellings to revisit: start with the words you already want to practice. This free spelling worksheet maker turns one list into writing practice, a fold-and-check activity, and a blank spelling test. Choose a single worksheet or combine activities in one printable packet.
The tool is for teachers, parents, tutors, and homeschool families preparing paper activities. There is no student account or class roster to set up. You choose the words and check the spelling; the maker handles the page layout and keeps the teacher copy in the same order.
How to make a custom spelling worksheet
- Paste your word list. Enter one English word per line, up to 30 words. If your list is in a spreadsheet, copy the cells from a single column. Blank lines and spaces around each word are removed. Comma-separated lists need to be changed to one word per line.
- Choose your activities. Select Write it three times, Look, cover, write, or Spelling test. You can select all three without entering your words again. At least one activity must stay selected.
- Set the page options. Add an optional title such as “Week 3: Long vowel words.” Choose A4 or US Letter and Standard or Wide writing space. Include the teacher word list if you want a separate reference for dictation or checking.
- Review every page. Check the words, title, page count, and writing space in the preview. Changing the list updates the selected activities and teacher copy together. Repeated words stay in the packet unless you remove them.
- Print or save. Select Print / Save PDF to open your browser’s print dialog. Print on paper, or select Save as PDF when your browser provides that option. No payment or advertisement viewing is required to print.
Three spelling activities from the same word list
Write each spelling word three times
Each row shows the original word followed by three writing lines. Learners can look at the model word while writing, then compare their work letter by letter. Choose this page when you want a straightforward copy-and-check exercise. Longer words may need smaller handwriting or a shorter practice list.
Look, cover, write
The original words appear in the left column beside a dotted fold line. Look at a word, fold the left column behind the paper, and write it from memory. Unfold the page to check the spelling, then use the final column to try again. The printed directions explain the fold so the sheet can also be sent home.
A printable spelling test
The test page contains numbered blank lines without showing the words. A teacher, parent, or tutor reads the words aloud in list order. If the test continues onto another page, its numbering continues too. Select the teacher word list to keep the prompts separate from the learner’s sheet.
For a simple weekly routine, you might use copying first, the fold-and-check page later, and the blank test at the end. This is an example of how to organize the pages, not a required sequence or a promise of a particular learning result.
Choosing words and writing space
Use words from the lesson, book, or spelling list you are already working with. You can prepare a short list for an individual practice session or a longer list for a class handout. The generator does not assign a grade level, select a curriculum, or decide whether a word is appropriate for a learner.
Standard spacing places up to nine words on each activity page. Wide spacing places up to seven, leaving more vertical room for handwriting. The teacher word list uses a compact layout of up to 20 words per page. Longer lists continue onto additional pages; the preview shows the total before you print.
For example, eight words with all three activities and a teacher copy make four pages with Standard spacing, or seven with Wide spacing. Choose the space that fits the learner’s handwriting rather than trying to fit everything onto one sheet.
Print on A4 or US Letter, or save as PDF
Select the paper size in the maker first, then use the same size in the browser’s print dialog. Use portrait orientation and start with 100% scale. Turn off browser headers and footers if you do not want the page address or print date on the worksheet. The editor, guide, and advertising areas are excluded from the worksheet’s print layout.
To keep a copy, choose Save as PDF or your device’s PDF printer in the print dialog. The button opens the browser’s printing controls; it is not a separate one-click PDF download. Print menus and PDF options vary by browser and device. If an embedded browser does not open a print dialog, open the page in a full browser and try there.
If a page looks wrong
- Text is cut off: check that the browser’s paper size matches A4 or Letter in the tool, and inspect the print preview before printing a class set.
- Writing lines are too close: choose Wide writing space in the maker rather than increasing the browser’s print scale, which may push content off the page.
- You need only the student pages: turn off Include teacher word list before printing. Turn it back on whenever you need a reference copy.
- The Print button is disabled: add at least one valid word, fix any indicated input errors, and select an activity.
Spelling worksheet maker FAQ
Is the spelling worksheet maker free?
Yes. All three activities, the teacher word list, and combined packets are free. You do not need an account, a subscription, or a payment to use the tool. You can edit and print another packet as often as you need.
Can I use my own spelling list?
Yes. Enter 1–30 English words, one per line. Each word may contain up to 30 characters. Internal hyphens and apostrophes are accepted, such as mother-in-law and can’t. Numbers, sentences, and unsupported characters are flagged so you can correct them before printing.
Does it include an answer key?
The optional teacher word list shows every word exactly as entered, in the same numbered order. Use it as the reference for the spelling test or to check the other activities. It is a copy of your input, not a dictionary-verified answer key, so check your original spellings first.
Can I make just a spelling test?
Yes. Select Spelling test and deselect the two practice activities. Keep Include teacher word list selected for a separate dictation reference, or turn it off to print only the blank test pages.
Are capital letters and duplicate words kept?
Yes. The maker preserves capitalization, spelling, word order, and repeated words. A duplicate warning lets you decide whether the repetition is intentional. It does not silently remove or autocorrect a word.
Can I make handwriting tracing or picture worksheets?
This version provides copy practice, fold-and-check practice, and a blank spelling test. It does not create dotted-letter tracing, cursive writing, picture prompts, word searches, or AI-generated exercises.
Do you save my words or collect student names?
The tool keeps entered words and the optional title in the current browser tab’s memory. It does not upload them, put them in the page URL, or save them for a later visit. Refreshing or closing the page clears your work. Student names and dates are blank lines to fill in on paper. Site-level data practices are explained in the Privacy page.
Can I reopen a saved PDF to edit the words?
A PDF is an output copy, not an editable project for this tool. Keep your original list in your own notes if you plan to use it again. Paste it back into the maker to change the words or generate a new set of activities.
