How to convert a recorded swim
This converter estimates a comparable event time between short course yards (SCY, 25 yd), short course meters (SCM, 25 m) and long course meters (LCM, 50 m). Use it to understand an existing result or compare pool formats. It does not turn a calculated time into a swim you actually completed.
- Select the course where the recorded time was achieved and the course you want to compare.
- Choose the event. The menu shows meters / yards together so distance-event pairings are visible before calculation. Choose the men’s or women’s factor category.
- Enter seconds, such as 60.00, or minutes:seconds.hundredths, such as 1:00.00. Press Calculate to confirm the estimate.
- Read the converted time first, then the route, multiplier and turn counts. Copy result includes the method note. Changing a time invalidates the result; calculate again before copying. After a valid calculation, changing a course or event recalculates the unchanged time.
Published method and its scope
The factor set is explicitly NCAA Division II 2023–24, from the pre-championship manual’s conversion section. It is a historical reference, not a claim about current NCAA entry eligibility. Men and women share the short-course factors; the long-course factors differ by category and event.
A factor converts each metric event to its paired yards event. For other directions this calculator divides or combines those factors through SCY. In symbols, target time = source time × source-to-SCY factor ÷ target-to-SCY factor. These inverse and composed directions are estimates derived here, not additional NCAA-approved conversions.
For the published metric-to-SCY direction, fractions below a hundredth of a second are dropped. Inverse and composed estimates round to the nearest hundredth. Intermediate time is not rounded, so a displayed six-decimal multiplier may differ slightly from the internal ratio. Converting back after a displayed time has been rounded or truncated may not reproduce the original hundredth.
Supported events and pool lengths
There are 14 individual-event selections: freestyle 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 meters; backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly 100 and 200 meters; and individual medley 200 and 400 meters. Their yards counterparts use the same numbers except freestyle 400/500, 800/1000 and 1500/1650. Relays, 50-meter stroke races, 100 IM, open water and arbitrary distances are outside this version.
The small diagram shows actual pool-length proportions: 25 yards is 22.86 meters, shorter than 25 meters, and a 50-meter pool is twice a 25-meter pool. Turn counts are race distance divided by pool length, minus one. The diagram and count explain the format; they are not an extra turn adjustment added to the published factors. A yards-to-meters distance ratio alone would not be this time-conversion method.
Worked examples
Men’s 100 freestyle: 1:00.00 LCM → 0:51.78 SCY using ×0.863. The race has 1 turn in LCM and 3 turns in SCY.
400 m freestyle in SCM at 5:00.00 → 500 yd SCY at 5:42.90 using ×1.143, for either category. This is a different race distance, not 400 yards.
The reverse of the first example, 0:51.78 SCY → 1:00.00 LCM in the men’s category, uses ÷0.863 and is an inverse estimate.
Limits and frequently asked questions
Times must be positive and no greater than 120:00.00. Seconds after a colon must be below 60; 1:75 is rejected. Use at most two decimal places. A decimal comma is accepted, but thousands separators and unit words are not. Clear preserves course, event and category while removing the time and result.
Is this a qualifying time or official record?
No. It is calculated. Check the actual event organizer’s current rules and use documented achieved times for official submissions.
Why can two converters disagree?
They may use different factor sets, seasons, divisions, additive turn models or rounding rules. Keep this converter’s named method with the output.
Does it predict my next race?
No. Individual starts, turns, underwater swimming, pacing and conditions can differ. No accuracy percentage is promised.
Why is there a category selector?
The historical long-course table has separate men’s and women’s coefficients. It has no effect on SCM-to-SCY calculations.
Can I use 500 meters or a relay?
Not in this version. Select one of the listed individual-event pairs; unsupported events are not approximated with a nearby factor.
