How to make a timeline

Use this timeline maker to present a personal story, a classroom history exercise or a sequence of milestones. Give the timeline a title, then enter each event's date and title. A description is optional. Add event creates another row; Remove event deletes that row. You can include up to 40 events. Enter real calendar dates as YYYY-MM-DD, from year 0001 through 9999.

The preview updates live. Choose Date for calendar milestones or Time for a single-day schedule. Switching modes preserves both sets of values. Create validates the selected mode and enables Copy, Download and Print; edits require creating again.

How to read the result

The output sorts events from the earliest date to the latest. Events sharing a date stay in their original input order; they are separate events, not duplicates to be deleted. The editor keeps your entry order so sorting does not move the fields while you type. Dates in the output use the page language. Descriptions retain line breaks and long words wrap.

This is a vertical sequence with regular gaps, not a proportional time axis. A ten-year gap and a one-day gap do not produce ten years' worth of different spacing. Longer descriptions occupy more height. Read the dates to judge elapsed time; the vertical distance only separates events for readability.

Two examples

Enter “First planting” on 2026-03-15, “Summer gathering” on 2026-06-21 and “Autumn harvest” on 2026-09-12. Even if you enter the harvest first, the output puts planting first, then the summer gathering and finally the harvest. All three events remain present in the printed result.

Events are ordered by time within one day. Equal times keep input order; spacing is not proportional. Use 24-hour time from 00:00 to 23:59 (HH:MM).

Print and save your work

Save JSON stores an editable version of your title and all event rows, including incomplete entries and their original order. Load JSON accepts this tool's version 1 files up to 256 KB. It replaces the editor only after a successful read. A bad file preserves current input. There is no automatic saving, cloud account or recovery after closing the page, so keep your JSON file when you need to return later.

Why is an event rejected?

Each event needs a valid date and a nonempty title of at most 120 characters. Descriptions allow 1000 characters, and the timeline title allows 120. February 29 is accepted only in leap years; dates such as April 31 are rejected. Blank rows must be completed or removed before creating output.

Can I use BC dates or invented years?

No. The supported range is Gregorian calendar years 0001–9999. Year zero, BC dates, partial dates, astronomical years and fictional calendars are not supported. The tool arranges what you enter; it does not generate or verify historical facts.

Can I make a project schedule?

You can present dated milestones, but there are no task durations, dependencies, assignments, progress tracking or proportional bars. This fixed vertical timeline is intended for readable event sequences, not project management.

How does the live preview work?

The preview updates live. Choose Date for calendar milestones or Time for a single-day schedule. Switching modes preserves both sets of values. Create validates the selected mode and enables Copy, Download and Print; edits require creating again.
