How to make a tree diagram
Write the root on the first line without spaces. Add two spaces before each child and four before each grandchild. Keep siblings at the same indentation. Blank lines are ignored. Select Create tree to validate the list and draw its connections.
For example, Project with two indented lines Research and Delivery creates three boxes. Add four spaces before Interviews under Research to give Research one child. The pale example hides on focus and reappears when an empty field loses focus. Your own text is kept.
Read the hierarchy
Choose left-to-right or top-to-bottom. Each column or row represents one deeper level, and connectors run from a parent to its immediate children. Boxes are placed automatically in the order of your list. Repeated labels are allowed because each line is a separate node.
Use this tree diagram maker for a project breakdown, classification, menu structure or organization outline. It does not check relationships or calculate probabilities. There is no free-drag canvas: change the list to change the structure.
Preview and download
Fit width shows the whole width in the result area. Choose 100% and scroll inside the preview to read a large diagram; your browser’s zoom remains available on mobile. Long labels wrap inside their boxes.
PNG has a white background. SVG keeps the complete vector diagram and text, which can be enlarged in other applications. Both exports use the same layout as the preview, regardless of its scale. Very large PNGs are reduced to the displayed pixel limits; SVG is preferable for those trees. Save TXT downloads editable UTF-8 text with its indentation.
Fix common errors
Only one root is accepted. To show separate groups, place them below a shared root. Tabs, odd numbers of spaces and jumping straight from root to grandchild produce an error with the input line number.
Reduce the input if it exceeds 80 nodes, 10 child levels or 160 characters per label. Labels are treated as plain text, including angle brackets. No files or outline contents are uploaded or saved between visits.
Can I edit a saved diagram?
Load your saved text into the editor by pasting it. PNG is an image; SVG is an export, not an import format. This tool does not store projects, synchronize collaborators or infer family relationships.
