How to convert a video to GIF

  1. Choose one local MP4 or WebM file. The tool checks the file signature and asks the browser to decode the real video stream.
  2. Set a start time and an end time after the duration appears. The end must be later than the start and the selected clip may not exceed 10 seconds.
  3. Choose Convert. Frames are sampled at 10 fps, scaled to no more than 480 pixels wide, encoded as an animated GIF, and shown before download.

What this converter does

This page makes a compact animated GIF from one short clip without sending the video to a server. It is useful for a brief demonstration, reaction, support step, or silent preview. GIF has a 256-colour palette and no audio, so it is not a replacement for the original video.

Limits and supported input

The starting limits are 50 MB per file, 60 seconds for the source, and 10 seconds for the selected output. Only MP4 and WebM containers are accepted, and the browser must be able to decode the codec inside. A file named .mp4 can still be rejected if its bytes or codec do not match. MOV, HEVC, URLs, YouTube, batches, long 4K sources, cropping and a complex timeline are not supported.

Output and quality

The output uses 10 frames per second and a maximum width of 480 pixels without enlarging smaller sources. The aspect ratio is preserved. Fewer colours and frames make GIF practical but may cause banding or less-smooth motion. Keep the selected moment short for a smaller result.

Examples

For a 6-second 1280×720 WebM, selecting 1.0 to 4.0 seconds creates about 30 frames at 480×270. For a 20-second MP4, selecting 12.5 to 17.5 seconds creates about 50 frames. The shown frame count and dimensions describe the generated GIF, not the source file.

Errors and safe retries

If the browser cannot read the codec, choose a browser-readable MP4 or WebM export. If the time range is invalid, correct only the marked values; the selected file remains. Choosing a new file, removing it, changing a time, or cancelling clears the old preview and download so a stale GIF cannot be saved.

FAQ

Why is there no sound? GIF does not carry audio. Why is the GIF large? Every frame stores pixels; shorten the clip. Does the file leave my device? No; processing occurs in this tab. Can it convert a link or every video format? No. Can I edit later? Download the GIF and use a dedicated editor if you need crop, text, or optimization.
