How to calculate a weighted grade

This calculator is for students, teachers, and families who need to combine scores that count by different amounts. It works for a one-time course-grade check: your entries stay on this page, no account is required, and the calculator does not build a semester record.

Step-by-step

  1. Enter a category or assignment name, such as Homework or Midterm exam.
  2. Enter its score as a percentage from 0 to 100.
  3. Enter the percentage of the course grade that item represents.
  4. Add rows as needed, then check the entered weight and each row’s contribution.
  5. When the rows are complete, use Print / Save PDF for a paper or browser PDF copy.

Worked example

Suppose Homework is 92% with a 25% weight, a Midterm is 84% with a 35% weight, and a Final project is 96% with a 40% weight. Their contributions are 23, 29.4, and 38.4 percentage points. The weights total 100%, so the weighted grade is 90.8%.

Select Load example to put those values into the calculator, then replace them with your own syllabus values.

What if the weights do not total 100%?

The large result is the average across only the weight you entered. For example, scores of 90% at 20% weight and 80% at 30% weight earn 42 weighted points across 50% of the course. The normalized entered-weight average is 84%.

The separate weighted-points result stays 42%, showing the contribution toward a full 100-point course total. A notice tells you how much weight is missing or whether your weights exceed 100%.

Blank, incomplete, and zero-weight rows

A completely blank row is ignored. If any field in a row contains text, complete its name, score, and weight or delete it; incomplete rows pause the results so they cannot be silently omitted. A 0% weight is valid and contributes zero, but at least one row must have a positive weight to calculate an average.

Common input problems

  • Enter percentages as numbers such as 87.5, without a percent sign.
  • Scores and weights must each be from 0 to 100 with no more than two decimal places.
  • If the total weight is over 100%, compare every row with the course syllabus and remove duplicates.
  • If your gradebook shows points rather than percentages, first calculate earned points ÷ possible points × 100.

Limits and grading policies

This is an arithmetic estimate, not an official gradebook. It does not apply dropped-score rules, extra credit above 100%, category caps, curved grades, pass/fail rules, or a school’s rounding policy. It also does not assign a letter grade because letter-grade cutoffs vary. Compare the result with your syllabus or official gradebook.

Printing and privacy

Print / Save PDF uses your browser’s print dialog and includes the result and completed rows, while leaving out editing controls, navigation, and any future advertising. Browser PDF support and page-size choices depend on your device. Entries are processed in the page and are not saved for a later visit.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter a missing assignment as zero? Only if your course currently counts it as a zero; otherwise omit it until it has a score. Can weights use decimals? Yes, up to two decimal places. Why can my gradebook differ? It may use hidden precision, special category rules, or a different rounding step.
