Word cloud generator

Turn text or word counts into a readable word cloud and download a PNG.

Text

Processed in your browser.

Up to 30,000 characters. List mode: one word or phrase and an integer count per line, e.g. garden,12.

Result

Generate to confirm your result.

How to make a word cloud

Start with the filled example and select Generate to confirm it. For your own material, focus the text box: this clears the demonstration once. Paste a paragraph, interview notes or a short set of survey answers. Choose Text for ordinary writing, or Word, frequency list when you already know the counts. Change the display limit, optional common-word filter, image font and colors, then generate again.

The preview near the input responds to edits but is not a saved result. Generate creates the confirmed image and its frequency list below. Any input or setting change hides that previous result, preventing an old download or copied count list from being mistaken for the new version. Clear removes the text and result.

What the word sizes mean

Text mode counts word-like segments using the browser’s Intl.Segmenter for the current page language, normalizes equivalent Unicode forms and combines uppercase and lowercase spellings. Punctuation and standalone emoji are not counted as words. Inflected forms and synonyms remain separate: this is frequency counting, not interpretation of meaning or sentiment.

More frequent words receive larger letters using a square-root scale between the smallest and largest selected counts. Equal counts receive equal font sizes. A cloud is a quick visual index, not a proportional-area chart: a long word naturally occupies more space than a short word of the same frequency. Use the displayed count list for exact comparisons.

Two examples to check

In Text mode, enter “garden garden garden sun sun rain”. With the filter off, Generate reports three unique words: garden 3, sun 2 and rain 1. Garden has the largest letters. Change the maximum word count without editing the source to retain those same underlying frequencies.

For a manually weighted cloud, select the list format and enter “garden,12”, “sun,6” and “rain,3” on separate lines. A phrase such as “community garden,12” stays together in this mode. Duplicate entries are added, so two lines containing “rain,3” produce a count of 6. Counts must be whole numbers from 1 to 999999; decimals and negative values are rejected.

Layout, limits and language support

The image is always 1200 × 800 pixels with a white background and horizontal words. The tool measures text bounds, searches for non-overlapping positions and may shrink the entire font scale to fit more words. It displays up to 25, 50 or 80 words, prioritizing frequency. The Not displayed count and names include words beyond that limit and any selected word that could not fit; nothing is silently removed.

Input is limited to 30,000 characters and each word or list phrase to 80 Unicode characters. The optional basic stop list uses the page language and only removes a small set of common words; it is not a complete linguistic dictionary. Japanese word boundaries depend on the browser’s segmentation data. Mixed-language text may need the explicit frequency-list format for predictable grouping. Older browsers without Intl.Segmenter can still use list mode.

Use and save your result

Download PNG saves the confirmed image for a presentation, classroom discussion or a first look at open-ended feedback. Copy result copies only the displayed words and exact counts as tab-separated text. The expandable frequency list provides the same information for manual selection if clipboard access fails.

Everything is processed locally and no account is required. The tool does not retain your source after you leave or reload the page, so keep your original text and download anything you need. Fonts come from your device; another system may produce a slightly different layout. Color choices affect the image, not the word counts.

Why is a word missing?

Check the common-word filter, maximum display limit and Not displayed list. A very long phrase may not fit even after scaling. Increase the display limit, shorten the phrase or use fewer entries; changing colors does not create more space.

Can I force a specific phrase or spelling?

Use the frequency list to keep a phrase together. Case is still merged, and equivalent Unicode spellings are normalized. There is no stemming, translation or automatic grouping of related concepts.

Is the image transparent or editable?

The export is a white-background PNG. This tool does not export SVG, editable text layers, custom shapes or external fonts. Keep the input if you need to make a revised image later.

Why is the result blank after an edit?

That is the unconfirmed state. The preview can change while you work, but you must select Generate again before copying or downloading. Empty text and invalid list lines receive an error instead of reusing an earlier successful result.
